Not so long ago you could only buy a Volvo if your name was Ken. Now Ken enjoyed trips to Ikea, watched the Antiques Roadshow with his dog Jess and did I mention that he was 104 years old? Therefore you would never consider buying a Volvo with your own hard earned cash, opting to borrow Ken’s services instead. But in recent times Volvo have started to produce cars designed by real people, starting with the epic XC90 a few years ago. Now there’s a more family designed XC60 which Volvo have now added a touch of Viagra, the XC60 R-Design.

The new Volvo XC60 R-Design screams style and presence
Every time I drive to work I pass a Volvo garage which I normally choose to ignore as there’s a much nicer Audi dealer opposite. But only recently have I started eyeing up the XC60 and after seeing a few on the road, firstly I need to point out it’s one great looking car. Even through it’s been jacked up to make it look like a 4×4, it looks so safe with its classic Volvo estate appearance. It’s not trying too hard to stand out from the crowd, it’s just letting you know it’s there and if you want to hit it, your be the worse off. It’s got tonnes of room inside for your bikes, 2.5 children and enough equipment to embarrass your local electrical store. If anything this is the bench mark for family cars, well, for people who live in Chelsea anyway. A car that looks like a 4×4, is as safe as a 4×4 but is more of a family car with an estate like feel. So you can imagine the smile on my face when I read about the new Volvo XC60 R-Design, no longer is this just a family car, its a bunny rabbit with spiky teeth.

The view your only ever see
Looking at it from any angle demands respect, those wheels can be upgraded to 20 inch alloys to suit your P Diddy soundtrack and those tailpipes will probably smoke far more than you do as well. The steering has been tweaked to give you a far more sportier experience, which will be handy when you need to dodge all those badgers whilst out on a sneaky Sunday morning blast. The normal petrol version will do 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds although figures for the new R-Design version haven’t been released, expect something similar. The only downside are the running cost, which will probably circle around the 4 billion pound mark. But with prices expected to start around £28K this could become one of the best family cars to own on the road, to the point where I’d even say this will probably become one of the coolest ways to go to school and I’d even expect it to be Dad, not Mum doing most of the driving. Hang on, is this the first car that Dad’s can own to do the school run? Volvo seem to be becoming something of a revolution.
Back to the original question, can you finally buy a Volvo? Yes you can, if your about to start a family, which most 17 years old are, this is the vehicle to go for.
